Trump-backed candidates lose in Michigan, North Carolina primaries

Republican voters in Michigan's 8th Congressional District chose Thomas J. Smith over Amir Hassan, the candidate endorsed by Donald Trump.1,2,4,6 Thomas J. Chuck Edwards of North Carolina announced he would not seek re-election following a House Ethics Committee recommendation for censure.3,5 The House Ethics Committee recommended censure for Edwards over "inappropriate" relationships with two young female aides in his office.3,5

Edwards' decision not to run again came one day after the ethics recommendation was made public.3,5 The Michigan primary is part of a broader effort by Republicans to expand their House majority in the November midterm elections.2 The Michigan 8th District includes areas around Flint, Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City.2

Trump's endorsed candidate in the Michigan race was defeated despite the former president's active campaigning for Hassan.1,2,4 Smith raised almost no money for his campaign, according to NBC News projections.4 Edwards' departure follows scrutiny over his conduct, which included allegations of inappropriate behavior toward staff.3,5
