US signs $3B deal to triple Patriot missile production

The U.S. signed a more than $3 billion deal with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to ramp up production of Patriot and THAAD interceptor missile parts.3,5 The Pentagon said that Patriot production will triple and THAAD systems output will quadruple under the framework deal.5 The deal follows a $58.6 billion contract for Lockheed to produce Patriot interceptor missiles announced the previous week.3

The U.S. has faced growing concerns over its air defense and precision-guided weapon inventories due to conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.4 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for U.S.-made Patriot missile interceptors after a Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed at least 10 people and injured dozens more on August 1.1 Zelenskyy stated, 'The world has Patriot missiles. What matters now is for our partners to make the political decision to provide the necessary packages.'1

Ukraine dismissed its ambassador to the U.S., Olha Stefanishyna, in a presidential decree published on August 3, coinciding with lobbying efforts for more Patriot missiles.6,8 Stefanishyna had served in her role for nearly a year, and her departure followed a broader shake-up of top Ukrainian officials, including the prime minister and defense minister.8 The U.S. has coordinated with Japan to prop up the yen after it fell to a 40-year low against the dollar, according to Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama.2

U.S. President Donald Trump said new talks with Iran would begin within a day or two, aiming to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address nuclear concerns.7 Ukrainian drone operators have used $400 Shrike drones with explosive payloads to destroy Russian armored vehicles and helicopters, with thousands now being upgraded with AI systems for autonomous target tracking.9
